about

Did You Do The Right Thing is a rather disarming track written from the perspective of the anxious, judgmental voice in your head. I've been interested in using spoken word lyrics for a while, inspired by samples used in instrumental tracks and the televangelist-style ranting of David Byrne on Talking Heads' Remain in Light. I couldn't think of a suitable melody over the slowly changing bouzouki drones, so I spoke from the brain.

lyrics

Think about it now
Think about it a long time
Because you know it's important, it's imperative, it's necessary

When you were in the situation
At the time, with the people
With your questionable motive
And your dubious thinking
Well it would be right for one to wonder
It'd be just for the jury to deliberate
Did you do the right thing?

When you were in school
Allegedly learning, ostensibly learning, supposedly learning,
Gaining some additional understanding of the world at large
Well did you ever think about right and wrong?
Did you ever wonder if you were wrong?
Did you do the right thing?

When you wrote those verses,
When you acted the role, wrote the song, drew the drawing,
I don't mean to interrupt your thinking
You should be focused on the present
But when you did those things
When you were in the situation
With your questionable motive and your dubious thinking
It would be right for one to wonder
It'd be just for the jury to deliberate
Did you do the right thing?

Think about it now,
Think about it a long time
Did you do the right thing?
